Underground space is our ‘hidden’ land resource. In this session, examples of underground space usage including caverns and tunnels in different parts of the world will be given. The reasons for going underground and the key planning and design considerations will be discussed. The strategy to formulate a holistic and long-term plan for wider application of rock caverns at the urban fringes and underground space under urban areas of Hong Kong will be introduced as an example of sustainable urban development in metropolitan cities.
