Prof. Qihu QIAN

Professor Qian Qihu, PhD, The Army Engineering University of PLA, China and former President of the Chinese Society for Rock Mechanics and Engineering (CSRME), is a Fellow of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) and has been undertaking advanced research in rock mechanics and stress wave analysis as well as practicing Engineering for over 50 years. He is a world renowned expert in rock mechanics and civil engineering and has been on various international committees, journals and leading publications in China and overseas. He has published over 200 papers in peer reviewed journals and has several notable monographs covering “Impact and Explosion Effects in Rock and Soil”, “Study of the Development and Utilization of Underground Space in Chinese Cities” as well as “Calculation Theory for Advanced Protective Structures”. He has been instrumental in developing and steering the various underground development initiatives in China. He is currently editor in chief of the Journal of Rock Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering, and a member of the Editorial Board of Chinese Journal of Rock Mechanics and Engineering, and China Civil Engineering Journal.


Future Urban Underground Infrastructure Construction in China

In the middle of this century, China will become a technologically advanced and beautiful country and it will go to the center of the world stage. The urban disease represented by traffic congestion, air pollution and urban waterlogging need to be solved urgently. The future urban passenger transportation is dominantly underground rail transit (subway) in the short and mid term and underground low-speed magnetic levitation system in the long term. The future intercity passenger transportation is dominantly EMU trains and high-speed trains in the short and mid term and high-speed magnetic levitation system in underground vacuum pipes in the long term. In addition, in order to alleviate traffic congestion, underground car parking system will be developed in urban core area. In the future, the urban logistics and transportation will adopt the underground cargo transportation system, which can be divided into the underground logistics system of the port city and the underground intelligent logistics system of the city. In order to solve the pollution problem caused by urban heating and refrigeration, in the future, the city can carry out coal-to-electricity and coal-to-gas projects, and vigorously promote geothermal energy. With the development of science and technology, dry hot rock heating utilization will become an important direction of clean heating. In the future, the construction of underground infrastructure in the "sponge city" mode will effectively deal with the problem of rain-flood waterlogging.
