Elizabeth Reynolds is a Chartered Urban Planner and Director of Urben, an east London studio focused on planning, design and problem solving for urban environments. Over the past 15 years Elizabeth has worked in multidisciplinary teams on major infrastructure and regeneration projects including the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and Crossrail. Urben works from macro scale strategic city plans to detailed street design, with a common theme of making cities creative, productive and resilient places. She is a co-founder of Think Deep UK and is currently writing a book titled Underground Urbanism about the overlooked but important places beneath our cities.

Underground Urbanism: How could we better plan for the future of our cities, both above and below ground?

Drawing on case studies from her forthcoming book underground Urbanism, Elizabeth will provide an Urban Planner and Designers perspective on how the subsurface could be better integrated into land use planning and development. Lessons from a workshop held by Think Deep UK and applied research undertaken for the British Geological Survey will be used to explain how underground solutions can be integrated through:

  • Sustainable Development Goals;
  • Planning Policy;
  • Decision making on development applications;
  • Urban design guidance; and
  • Smart city tools
